Microsoft’s devices team wanted a showstopper—something that turned Surface, Windows tablets, and Kinect into a unified retail story. Enter 5D: our prototype for the future of personal shopping. Built by the Emerging Experiences team and unveiled at NRF with Microsoft and NEC, 5D fused five critical layers—devices, content, experiences, analytics, and CRM—into one seamless platform. Powered by Windows Embedded, Surface, MS Tag, Windows Phone, and Kinect for Windows, we created “Razorfashion,” a fictional brand used to demonstrate how digital touchpoints could attract shoppers, deepen product engagement, and equip associates with context-aware tools. All in service of making retail smarter, more connected, and future-ready.
